THE SCOTT MISSION Founded in 1941 by Morris and Anne Zeidman, The Scott Mission is a Christian based, non-denominational street mission located at College and Spadina in Toronto. With the belief that “the hunger of the soul needs to be addressed as well as the hunger of the physical body,” the mission offers provisions for the homeless, as well as low-income families and others who need assistance. A food bank, no cost clothing, hot meal service, showers, housing, recreation activities, prayer groups, Christmas packages for families, a family summer camp, and a child care centre are just some of the services the Mission offers. In A Song Beneath The Ice, Maisela Singer (a former pupil of Lupo, just like Dom) is a sometimes resident of the Scott Mission, and he plays piano there for the other men. Dom first learns of this during a conversation with Carol Paterson, a photographer who has shown Dom a photograph of Singer in front of the piano. She describes how she got the shot, “I was walking past the Scott Mission one afternoon... Piano is not the first thing you expect from a shelter... It was clear he’d been trained to play. He wasn’t paying attention to anything.” (page 122-123) Later in the novel, Dom goes to the Scott Mission to look for Singer. He writes his observations of the mission in his notebook, and tapes Singer's jittery performance (pages 177-184). -jack gross More information on The Scott Mission can be found here:
