Björk Guðmundsdóttir is an Icelandic musician, well known for her wide variety of music genres such as trip hop, alternative rock and electronica. She was born in 1965, in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. Björk began playing classical music at a young age. Throughout her teens, Björk formed several punk bands with her friends. Björk’s most successful teen band was called ‘The Sugarcubes’ who joined Elektra records, an American company and recorded their first single, titled, ‘Life’s Too Good’. In 1992 after six years, the Sugarcubes broke up. Soon after, Björk moved to London to pursue a solo career. Her first solo album titled ‘Debut’ was released in 1993 and went platinum in the US. It was also named album of the year by New Musical Express, a popular British Magazine. Björk’s second solo album, titled ‘Post’ was a mixture of techno, trip hop and electronica. Post has been certified platinum in the US and was ranked number 373 on the Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of all Time. Since the album Post, Björk has released several new albums, however, none were as successful as her first two. Björk also enjoy a successful career in show business. In 1992, Björk appeared in the film The Juniper Tree, a story that was based on the Brothers Grimm tales. In 1999, Björk was offered the job of producing the score for the movie Dancer in the Dark. She also played the lead in the film and in 2000 she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Music/ Original Song. Björk has enjoyed a very successful career in both music and film. She is also a well-known philanthropist as she raised a great deal of money for the tsunami relief fund in 2005. While Björk was not accepted by everyone, she will be known as one of the greatest alternative musicians in history. | ![]() ![]() ![]() |
In Song Beneath the Ice, Dominic Amoruso mentioned his obsession with Björk several times. Her variety of different styles of music inspired him. Dom says, "Careful, Björk is my current favourite. I would crawl over broken glass all winter long just to say hello to her in the spring. (103)
