Steinway Pianos was started in 1853 in New York City by German immigrant Henry E. Steinway. Steinway established at his company three basic principles: "Build to a standard, not a price", "Make no compromise in quality", and "Strive always to improve the instrument". The Steinway pianos are know for their class and hold the record for the world ís most expensive grand piano, the world ís most expensive grand piano sold at auction, and the worlds most expensive upright piano. In Song Beneath the Ice the main character, Dom Amoruso, has a Steinway piano in his studio apartment. "Except for the eloquence of his piano, which stood lid-up, mute in his studio suicides, as a rule, tend to leave [a note], he'd have left his on the Steinway." (P14) Dom has a "thing" for Glenn Gould. He takes after many of Gould ís strange habits and since Gould played a Steinway, it ís a fairly good bet Dom bought his with Gould in mind. - Spencer Barton | ![]() |
