PHO HUNG The only thing certain in the very misty history of the delicious Vietmanese soup know as ‘pho’ is that it has been around for about half a century. Pho is a crazy tasteful noodle soup, often made with chicken or beef broth, flavoured with a medley of spices and herbs, and topped with slices of beef and fresh bean sprouts. Pho Hung is a restaurant chain in Toronto with two locations; one in Chinatown, and one on Bloor across from the ROM. Eating at Pho Hung is a rad dandy experience. Once seated at a table in the large red room you will dig into the massive menu, which seems to be comprised of the same dish over and over again with miniscule differences between each option. After the decision has been made, and the soup and bean sprouts have arrived, you will dig into the massive bowl and be filled with happiness and warmth. Pho Hung is one of the many Asian restaurants that Dom frequents in Toronto. One scene early on in the novel takes place in the restaurant, a recorded conversation between Dom and Buddy Kenk. “The next sounds are of lunch, at Pho Hung, presumably. It’s the nearest soup joint to the store...This is the heart of Amoruso country. Pho Hung is one of the places I’d gone looking for him the night he disappeared.” (pages 51-52) - jack gross ![]() | ![]() |
